What Are The Different Layers Of Soil?
There are several main layers of soil. Each layer has its own set of characteristics that make it unique.
Description of each soil layer:
- Top Soil- The top layer of soil is called the topsoil. This is the layer of soil that contains the most nutrients and is where most plants grow.
- Sub Soil- The subsoil is the layer of soil below the topsoil. It’s not as fertile as the topsoil, but it still contains some nutrients that plants need to grow.
- Organic Litter Layer- The organic litter layer is the layer of dead leaves, twigs, and other organic matter that has fallen to the ground. This layer provides nutrients for plants and helps keep the soil moist.
- Eluviated Leaching Layer- The eluviated leaching layer is the layer of soil that has been washed away by rainwater. This layer is usually lighter in color than the layers above it. The eluviated leaching layer is also known as the leached horizon.
- Weathered Parent Material- Material that has been broken down or flakes off of bedrock by physical weathering processes such as abrasion, frost wedging, and gravity; can be transported by water, wind, or ice to another location where it is deposited.
- Rock Parent Material- Bedrock that has not been significantly changed by weathering processes; Igneous rock (cooled lava or magma), metamorphic rock (changed heat and/or pressure), sedimentary rock (layers of small pieces).
- Groundwater- Water that fills fractures and pores in bedrock and sediments below the water table; also known as aquifers.
