What Does “Pasture-Raised” Mean?

Pasture-raised is a more specific term that refers to chickens that have been raised on a pasture where they can regularly eat plants and insects along with their regular feed. (Assuming you even offer them regular feed – some chickens have so much fresh food available to them while on pasture that they are only offered commercial chicken feed on bad weather days when they can’t go out to roam.)

This method of farming is considered more natural, as it allows for chickens to enjoy a more natural habitat and feeding behaviors.

Pasture-raised chickens are typically kept in smaller flocks and have access to a large outdoor space. They also frequently have mobile coops that allow them to be moved around frequently, ensuring they always have access to fresh pasture. However, chickens can be trained to come back to a stationary coop on their own every night.

Once you’ve lived off of pasture raised eggs for a while, you’ll have a hard time going back to free range eggs or especially conventional store bought eggs. The flavor profile is just so different! The more bugs and fresh greens your chickens get, no matter how they’re raised, the richer and more delicious their eggs will be.

Free-range chickens, while having access to outdoors, may still be kept in crowded conditions with limited space per bird. And they certainly tend to have less bugs and greenery available because the ground is more heavily covered.

As long as your chickens are well-fed and kept safe from predators, it is best to do what is right for your situation. Not every chicken can have 45 acres of grasslands with their own personal livestock guardian dog.
